New order for batteries for hybrid construction machinery

Alelion Energy Systems has received a follow-up order from Huddig for high-voltage batteries for construction machinery. The order, which will equip the first series production vehicles, amounts to approximately MSEK 1.6, and delivery will take place in 2022.

The battery manufacturer Alelion and Huddig, leading manufacturer of construction machinery, are now seeing the results of operational work carried out with test machinery. The solution applies to the backhoe loader TIGON, which is a hybrid model of Huddig’s best-selling backhoe loader 1260.

The powertrain of the hybrid backhoe loader combines a combustion engine with several electrical motors supplied by a lithium-ion battery.

“Demand for hybrid machinery in construction is projected to grow strongly in order to minimize emissions and noise, in particular in sensitive surroundings and urban environments – but also in infrastructure such as overhead lines and railways, where demand is driven by entirely new requirements” says Lars Lindahl, CEO of Huddig.

In tandem, Huddig and Alelion have developed solutions that meet a particularly demanding specification that requires a high power output in a harsh environment. The battery can supply a continuous current of 900 A due, in part, to a sophisticated climate system including both electric heating and liquid cooling/heating.

Feedback from end users doing operational work indicates that the first pre-production machines supplied to customers have performed very well, with excellent performance and reliability. Performance aside, a most welcome effect of the hybrid concept was the pleasant and less noisy working environment, which facilitates the communication and cooperation between machine operators and personnel on the ground.

“We have appreciated the close and challenging cooperation with a technically skilled customer that was able to benefit from our battery-technology expertise,” says Åsa Nordström, CEO of Alelion Energy Systems.
