Alight joins the Solar Stewardship Initiative to strengthen responsible solar supply chains

Report this content

Alight, a leading solar developer and independent power producer, has joined the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI), the supply chain sustainability assurance scheme dedicated to the solar PV industry.

Designed as a multi-stakeholder initiative, the SSI gathers companies from across the global solar value chain, as well as independent ESG actors, civil society and the international finance community. Working with all relevant stakeholders across the value chain, the SSI fosters responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship practices for materials used in solar projects.

As a participant in Solar Power Europe’s Supply Chain Sustainability Workstream, we have closely followed the creation of and development of the Solar Stewardship Initiative. By becoming an SSI Member, Alight underscores its commitment to responsible sourcing and greater transparency in the solar value chain. The Initiative is aligned with established European law and internationally recognised standards and frameworks, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct.

“Joining the Solar Stewardship Initiative is an important step for Alight in deepening our due diligence and join forces with peers, civil society and experts to push for higher standards for solar manufacturing worldwide. We want to do our part in ensuring our industry develops sustainable solar”, says Johanna Snickars, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer.

As an SSI Member, Alight commits to applying the Solar Stewardship Initiative Standards and Principles in its operations and encouraging their adoption along its supply chain, as well as completing assessments of selected production sites against the SSI Standards and continuously improving performance over time.

At Alight, we’re on a mission to kick carbon off the grid by helping energy-intensive businesses switch to solar. We develop, own and operate onsite and offsite solar projects across Europe and sell the clean energy to businesses at a low, fixed cost backed by a power purchase agreement (PPA), always independent of government funding or subsidies. By 2030, we aim to have an installed capacity of at least 5 GW, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
