Alight to build Kingspan factory rooftop solar power plant
Kingspan Group has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Alight to provide solar energy to its state-of-the-art factory in Stigamo outside Jönköping, Sweden. Under the terms of the agreement, the rooftop solar power plant will provide 20 percent of the factory’s total electricity requirements. Once commissioned, the Stigamo factory solar power plant will be one of Sweden's largest rooftop solar installations.
Kingspan Group, a global building materials company, has signed a PPA with the solar energy company Alight. Alight will invest in, deliver and manage the rooftop photovoltaic plant at the Kingspan factory, and Kingspan has signed an energy purchase agreement to buy electricity from the plant.
– We are extremely pleased to announce our collaboration with Kingspan. Rooftops are largely underutilized areas in Sweden, and many industrial rooftops here are well suited for solar power generation. Solar rooftop installations are a good complement to purchasing electricity from large-scale solar parks, says Harald Överholm, CEO of Alight.
Headquarted in Ireland, Kingspan has long been committed to accelerating a net zero emissions future. The agreement with Alight, which extends over 25 years, will help the Group hedge its electricity costs, reduce its environmental impact and protect against volatility in the electricity market.
– Climate change is the most important issue facing the world, and the construction industry has an important role to play in climate change mitigation. We believe in low energy buildings for a clean energy future and solar energy is part of that future, says Anja Cronholm, Marketing Manager Nordic & Baltics at Kingspan.
The solar rooftop installation at Kingspan Stigamo factory will have an installed capacity of 1310-kilowatt power (kWp). It will produce approximately 1.15 GWh a year, equivalent to meeting the average annual household electricity consumption of 230 single-family homes. The Stigamo factory solar rooftop plant, the largest BTM (behind-the-meter) corporate PPA in the region, will be completed and begin delivery of clean electricity in the summer 2021.
Kingspan is a member of RE100, a global initiative that brings together the world’s most influential companies committed to using 100% renewable electricity.
– The corporate PPA market in Europe is growing rapidly, thanks in large part to pioneering projects like this. RE-Source congratulates Kingspan and Alight Energy on their innovative work and look forward to seeing more projects like this in the future, says Hannah Hunt, Impact Director at RE-Source, Europe’s leading forum for corporate purchasing of renewable energy funded by, among others, RE100.

About Alight
At Alight, we’re on a mission to kick carbon off the grid by helping energy-intensive businesses switch to solar. We develop, own and operate onsite and offsite solar projects across Europe and sell the clean energy to businesses at a low, fixed cost backed by a power purchase agreement (PPA), always independent of government funding or subsidies. By 2030, we aim to have an installed capacity of at least 5 GW, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
