All Children’s Hospital Ranked in Top 50 of U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-15 Best Children’s Hospitals
St. Petersburg – June 10, 2014 - U.S. News & World Report ranked All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine as a top provider of care in three specialty areas in the new 2014-15 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. All Children’s Hospital ranked #34 in cardiology and heart surgery, #48 in cancer and #37 in orthopedics care out of 183 children’s hospitals. All Children’s was the only children’s hospital that ranked in the Tampa Bay area and one of only two children’s hospitals in Florida ranked as a top hospital for cancer care.
In order to help families of sick children find the best medical care available, U.S. News & World Report ranks the top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities each year in cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. Eighty-nine hospitals ranked in at least one specialty, based on a combination of clinical data and reputation with pediatric specialists.
“Ranking in the top 50 for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery, cancer and orthopedics is a significant accomplishment for All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine,” said Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president and physician in chief at All Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatrics and vice dean, All Children’s Hospital at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “The results reflect our ongoing focus on providing the best patient safety, evidence-based medicine and quality care in all of the pediatric specialty programs offered at All Children’s Hospital.”
Scores are based on patient outcomes, care-related resources available, a clinical questionnaire to 183 pediatric hospitals and a survey of 450 pediatric specialists and subspecialists in each specialty area asking where they would send the sickest children in their specialty, setting aside location and expense.
“These results are due to the dedication of our physicians, nurses and all the members of the clinical team as they provide innovative care with a focus on safety and quality,” said Brigitta Mueller, M.D., chief patient safety officer at All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine and vice president of medical affairs. “This year, outcomes, best practices and infection prevention were assigned greater weight in the formula used to determine the survey rankings and our strong outcomes and data are reflected in these results.”
Specialists at All Children’s Hospital have the opportunity to collaborate on treatment and research with colleagues at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, which ranked on U.S. News & World Report’s top 10 Honor Roll for best children’s hospitals.
