Allianz Travel Insurance Vacation Confidence Index Shows More Than Half of America Hasn’t Taken a Vacation in Past Year
Survey shows 135 million Americans haven’t had a vacation in the past 12 months
For many Americans, the time between vacations has grown longer. That’s according to the sixth annual Allianz Travel Insurance “Vacation Confidence Index,” which tracks Americans confidence in whether they’ll be able to take a vacation this year.
The survey, conducted in June, revealed that more than 135 million Americans (56%) say they haven’t taken a vacation within the past 12 months – an increase of almost 10 million from the 126 million Americans (52%) who reported no vacation over the past 12 months in 2014.
Another 15% haven’t been on vacation for seven to 12 months and 10% say it has been four to six months. Only 16% have been on vacation within the last three months.
While the time between vacations is increasing, the majority of Americans (51%) remain confident that they’ll take a vacation in 2015, compared to 36% who are not confident.
“With more Americans waiting longer between vacations, it’s even more important that their travel investment is protected,” said Mike Nelson, CEO at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “The last thing travelers want is an unforeseen circumstance ruining the vacation they’ve been waiting over a year to take. The right travel insurance policy will give peace of mind from those unanticipated travel delays, lost luggage, sickness and medical emergencies.”
The Vacation Confidence Index has been conducted each summer since 2010 by national polling firm Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Allianz Global Assistance USA. A vacation is defined as a trip of at least a week to a place that is more than 100 miles from home.

Methodology: These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted June 5th to 9th, 2015. For the survey, a nationally representative sample of 1,000 randomly-selected adults residing in the U.S. interviewed by telephone via Ipsos’ U.S. Telephone Express omnibus. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire population of adults in the U.S. been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/gender composition reflects that of the actual U.S. population according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
