With the summer travel season ending soon, travelers may be looking for a late summer getaway. While Greece is always a popular destination, the island nation’s financial situation may be giving potential visiting tourists cause for concern.
This summer, travel assistance expert Allianz Global Assistance advises vacationers to plan carefully, but not to discount Greece as a destination.
Top tips for travelling to Greece:
• Most major travel insurance policies include Cancellation coverage, which applies to very specific life events such as the policyholder losing his/her job, falling ill or suffering an injury after purchasing the policy. Cancellation coverage should not be confused with “Disinclination to Travel”, (changing your mind), which most travel insurance policies do not cover. So before you book your flights and/or accommodation, be sure you are serious about your travel plans and will not change your mind.
• If you’ve already booked a trip to Greece but would like to postpone it, your travel suppliers may be willing to accommodate you. Many travel insurance policies allow you to change the effective dates of your policy to coincide with your new dates of travel.
• Be sure to take enough cash with you (smaller denominations where possible) to last your entire stay in Greece, or at least several days. While there are currently no restrictions on international card withdrawals, this could change, and there are reports that ATMs may run out of cash.
• A successful vacation requires vigilance and making smart decisions. Pickpockets and thieves will know that tourists are carrying extra cash and they will be on the lookout for them. So, safeguard your own security by keeping your valuables and extra cash in the hotel safe.
• Ideally, and in addition to cash, carry a second means of payment (such as a debit or credit card) with you when you go out.
• And remember to carry the contact number of your Travel Agent or Tour Operator with you while abroad. It is also a good idea to bring along a copy of your correspondence and insurance policy details.
