Alma Media Corporation Press release 22 January 2020
ALMA MEDIA RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR ITS ACTIONS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE, MAKING IT A GLOBAL FORERUNNER AT ITS SECTOR
Alma Media has received the Leadership level rating A– in the Climate Change Disclosure 2019 assessment of the international CDP organisation. The average rating for media companies, i.e. those operating in the publishing and printing business, was B–, and none of the media companies received the A rating, or were ranked higher than Alma Media.
CDP is a non-profit operator promoting sustainable development, whose annual assessment classifies companies promoting sustainable economy globally on the scale A–D. The organisation maintains a global reporting system through which companies, cities, states of countries and regions can measure, monitor and control their environmental impacts. In 2019, globally about 8,400 companies reported on their environmental impacts through the CDP’s Climate Change Disclosure system, and approximately 500 companies reached the Leadership level in the assessment, i.e. received the rating A or A–.
”Alma Media has been engaged in long-term efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions for years. Our improved CDP result reflects the results achieved and strengthens our decision to continue climate work in a determined fashion,” says Corporate Responsibility Manager Kirsi Hantula.
Alma Media has been reporting to CDP since 2010. Its improved rating in 2019 was advanced by science-based climate goals prepared in the previous year. According to the goals, Alma Media must reduce the direct CO2 emissions arising from its operations by 21 per cent by 2025 and the indirect CO2 emissions mainly caused by its subcontracting by 10 per cent by 2023. The international Science Based Targets initiative has approved Alma Media’s goals.
Alma Media’s greenhouse gas emissions have decreased through the digitalisation of its business. The foundation of the company’s corporate responsibility is responsible journalism, high-quality marketing solutions and responsibly produced digital services.
