This is how Finns look for jobs – “Dramatic change in the number of applications”
Alma Media Corporation Press release 31 October 2023
THIS IS HOW FINNS LOOK FOR JOBS – “DRAMATIC CHANGE IN THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS”
Over one million job applications were sent through the Finnish job board Jobly during its first year. This is a significant increase compared to the previous year, even though the total number of open job positions in Finland has decreased.
Finnish job search activity is clearly more active than in the previous year. Over one million job applications have been sent through Jobly during the sites first year. The number of job applications has almost doubled compared to the previous year, when the site was still known as Monster.fi.
– There is a dramatic change in the number of applications. The covid years triggered a job change boom, which shows no signs of subsiding. Inflation and growing interest rates are driving the search for better-paid work, says Mika Kiiskinen, Country Manager of Jobly.
Clicking the 'Apply for the job' button in a job advertisement is counted as an application. In addition to the increased number of applications, the number of job alerts grew by 35 percent and 65 percent more CVs were uploaded to the service than in the previous year.
– Our website, renewed a year ago, is performing better, and we are reaching job seekers more effectively, says Kiiskinen.
A great time to publish jobs
According to the Employment Bulletin by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, there were 32,500 fewer new open positions in September than in the previous year.
Even though the total number of open job positions has decreased, there are still sectors that are severely affected by a labor shortage.
In Jobly, the sectors with the most job openings over the year were sales, transportation and logistics, administrative and office work, healthcare, and installation and maintenance. There were also plenty of openings in customer service positions and in the hotel and restaurant industry.
– Now is a good time for employers to publish jobs and market them. There are fewer jobs available, but they are being browsed more than before, making it easier to catch job seekers’ attention with effective advertising, Kiiskinen says.
How do Finns look for jobs?
Jobs are most actively sought at the beginning of the year. Another spike in job applications occurs after the summer holidays.
The busiest days for job searching are Monday and Tuesday. Jobs are browsed most actively in the mornings. According to Joblyn's data, positions are viewed most on mobile devices, but applications are most often submitted on a computer.
Effective job ads highlight a clear and descriptive title, as well as providing sufficient information about the position.
– In a good job post, the requirements for the employee are balanced with the salary and benefits offered. Nowadays, values and responsibility are emphasized in addition to salary, says Kiiskinen.
