Alstom sells its ring motors activities in Spain to ABB

Alstom announces the sale of its ring motors[1] activities in Bilbao to ABB. In order to refocus on its core activities and be ready for further opportunities, Alstom has decided to concentrate its Bilbao site on activities directly related to hydropower. As part of the agreement with ABB, Alstom will relocate these activities to another site in Bilbao

The Bilbao site produces hydro equipment for several projects. The site will notably supply part of the equipment for the Devoll River hydroelectric power plant in Albania. In Spain, Alstom has installed over 300 hydropower turbines and 2,000 generators, with a total installed capacity of 7 gigawatts, representing 40% of the total hydropower capacity in the country.

[1] Ring motors are used in the mining industry as one of the pieces of a gearless mill drives for grinding raw materials. The 2012/13 turnover of this activity was €57 million.
