ABS Participates in Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2021
ABS joined over 15,000 visitors and 250 Exhibitors in Dubai for the Annual Gastech Exhibition and Conference September 21-23. This three-day exhibition and conference brought together professionals from the global energy market and has been at the forefront of upstream, midstream and downstream gas and LNG.
Stavros Niotis, ABS Principal Engineer, presented a technical paper on CNG Transportation from the perspective of the Gas Vessel project in the Shipping, Storage and Containment session.
Niotis also moderated two technical sessions during the week. One session focused on new developments in shipping, storage and terminals specifically on projects relative to the use of LNG and/or other alternative fuels (like Ammonia) on the marine industry. The other session focused on small scale LNG bunkering, ship-to-ship transfers and small-scale LNG transshipments. The papers presented on this session focused mainly on lessons learned from some of the first LNG bunkering operations for large LNG fueled Containerships and the compatibility studies performed in advance, the operational challenges of the first LNG hub in Indonesia, especially with respect to the transshipment of various LNG cargoes and the efforts to maintain the final composition and heating value and finally how a small scale LNG project in British Columbia Canada resolved the issues on gaining access to stranded gasses with a sustainable transportation solution.
ABS Published Industry-Leading Guide to Ammonia-Fueled Vessels during Gastech, please click here.
The Guide sets out Classification design criteria for the arrangements, construction, installation and survey of machinery, equipment and systems for vessels operating with ammonia as fuel to minimize risks to the vessel, crew and the environment.
During the week, ABS granted Approval In Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) for the next generation Liquefied CO2 Carrier.
HMD developed a cargo containment system optimized for liquefied CO2 based on its existing gas carrier construction experience, while KSOE developed a cargo handling system with new technology to maintain a stable state without carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere. ABS and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator granted AIP, verifying the suitability of IGC Code, Class requirements and flag regulations for liquefied gas carriers.
ABS also granted GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) and Deltamarinan an AIP for their new design of an LNG-fueled tanker using membrane tank technology.
