ABS Presents at Industry Workshop by Hellenic Ships' Design and Construction Directorate

Dr. Demetres Armanes, ABS Manager, Technology, Engines and Controls Center, presented the applicable ABS Rules, guides, type approvals, technology qualifications and vessels’ classification updates about hybrid and electric vessels, during a workshop in Athens organized by the Hellenic Ships’ Design and Construction Directorate of the Greece Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy. 

During the workshop, the draft of the new national “Regulation for Safe Electrification, Electric Charging, Berthing Surveys, and Certification of Electric and Hybrid Vessels” was presented and discussed by specialists from major classification societies on issues related to electrification, electric charging, and certification of electric and hybrid ships.

During the discussion, Demetres identified the challenging environmental and operational conditions of the Hellenic Coastal Shipping and highlighted that such conditions should be part of the design and integration testing processes, for new hybrid and electric vessels operating in national waters.

Dr. Chris Leontopoulos, ABS Vice President, Technology, Europe, expressed that “the ABS Technology Electrification Team will be supporting the national developments by providing technical comments on the new regulation, projects and product support based on the growing hybridization and electrification experience gained from various ABS deliverables around the world.”
