ABS Director of Regional Business Development for Middle East & Africa Chris Greenwood and ABS Manager of Regional Business Development, Middle East & Africa Unni Nair participated in a webinar hosted by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects’(RINA) UAE Branch where they presented on the use of hybrid power systems in the offshore industry.

Approximately 100 representatives including, owners, operators, designers, shipbuilders, and other industry partners joined the webinar.

“ABS continues to collaborate with industry on assessing solutions for compliance with regulatory requirements and improving efficiencies,” said Chris Greenwood. “Using ABS’s wealth of experience and technical expertise, we are able to provide practical advice on adopting alternative energy sources and hybrid power strategies.”

Greenwood and Nair spoke about the development of hybrid power, its advantages and challenges, and how its application can enhance efficiencies and meet environmental compliance targets. They also shared real-life success stories from hybrid power implementation in ABS classed vessels demonstrating that ABS is at the forefront of classing vessels that have adopted hybrid technology.

“The offshore and marine industries are adapting to new regulations and requirements creating the driver for hybrid power systems to become a more techno-economically practical solution” Nair said. “Many new technologies support this hybrid development with energy storage devices such as batteries or super capacitors, as well as power generation methods like fuel cells, solar power, and shaft generators.” To help guide the industry in the development of new concepts, ABS has introduced the ABS Advisory on Hybrid Electric Power Systems which takes a measured approach to evaluating the potential advantages and disadvantages, challenges, and level of readiness for the primary hybrid electric power systems and components that are most suited for marine and offshore applications. In addition, the ABS Guide for use of Lithium Batteries in the Marine and Offshore Industries, ABS Guide for use of Supercapacitors, ABS Guide for Direct Current (DC) Power Distribution Systems and ABS Guide for Fuel Cell Power Systems provide Class requirements and reference standards to facilitate effective installation and operation of these technologies.
