IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Leading Greek Shipowners Highlight Challenges of Decarbonization
ABS brings together industry players to discuss regulation, future fuels, energy efficiency and the role of wider stakeholders
ATHENS, January 2021. ABS hosted a webinar featuring leaders from the Greek shipping community, addressing emerging and evolving issues in the transition to decarbonization in the maritime industry.
The panel featured Panos Zachariadis, Technical Director of Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management, Stavros Hatzigrigoris of Zodiac Maritime Ltd, Panos Kourkountis, Technical Director of Sea Traders, Dimitrios Fafalios, President of Fafalios Shipping, Kostas Vlachos, COO of Latsco Marine Management, and Georgios Plevrakis, ABS Director, Global Sustainability.
With short-term measures continuing to develop against the backdrop of the IMO’s targets for reducing carbon emissions, decarbonization remains a priority for shipping but one with many unanswered questions.
The panelists each challenged the process of decarbonization with calls for greater transparency and inclusion of charterers in the regulatory process. They also drew attention to the work required before alternative fuels are commercially available and the importance of energy efficiency.
“It was a privilege to be able to hear the combined expertise of these industry leaders on the urgent issues facing shipping today. Together, their huge experience of shipping and its regulatory landscape means we heard powerful insight on the technical and regulatory challenges the industry is grappling with,” said Plevrakis, who moderated the panel. “ABS is committed to working with shipowners to help them navigate the emerging landscape of global environmental regulation.”
