ABS Senior Vice President of Global Offshore Markets, Matthew Tremblay, joined a panel of industry experts from EM&I Group, Genesis Oil and Gas and Sofec to discuss on the subject of “FPSO Solutions for Oil & Gas Fields: What Lies Ahead” at OTC Asia Virtual Conference.

As the offshore industry move towards advanced smart technologies and digitalization, the panelists talked about how the FPSO sector can embrace new technologies to enhance FPSO solutions and the challenges faced.

In his opening presentation, Matt talked about the evolution of the FPSO and the impact of new technologies on FPSO operations, particularly how digital tools available today such as the use of digital twin can help maximize efficient and minimize operational cost during early project CAPEX planning.

Matt also answered questions on the remote inspection technologies and the challenges involved.

“Class has been performing its role for over 150 years and applying different inspection schemes on a calendar-based system for majority of the time. As we moved towards conditioned based approach, we can help to improve process by using digital tools that allow us to track and analyze data like never before.  For example, ABS has a Smart Guide in place for the application of smart technologies where we can use AI and machine learning tools to allow machinery to tell us when an equipment need to be inspected and when it needs to be maintained.”

Matt concluded by highlighting that in order to balance the CAPEX spending for digital tools and competitive cost of the asset is to consider the incremental adoption of the tools and functions needed at that time.

“When you have a brand new FPSO, it may make sense to build the condition model that is going to live alongside the FPSO.  However, if your FPSO is two years old, you probably do not have the need or requirement of analysis on a real-time basis until the FPSO is later in its life when the FPSO needs life extension and damage assessment.”

Liu Xiang, Principal Engineer at ABS, also presented a technical paper on the application of structural health monitoring for structural digital twin at OTC Asia. He talked about how using sensor planning data acquisition, data processing, analytic models, proper integration of data and data analytics can help with SHM plan and structural digital twin implementation.
