Next Generation Warship Strategies Debated
ABS SVP Howard Fireman Moderates Panel of Senior Navy Executives
(HOUSTON) The American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Technology, Systems and Ships Virtual Symposium featured a panel moderated by ABS Senior Vice President Howard Fireman.
The panel was titled A 21st Century Warship Design, Acquisition Strategy: Meeting the Chief of Naval Operations Challenge. The panel featured US Navy Senior Executive Service members John C. Hootman, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Deputy Director of Surface Warfare; Naval Sea Systems Commander; J. Carey Filling, Director, Surface Ship Design and Systems Engineering and Thomas M. Rivers, Program Executive Office, Ships, Executive Director.
Fireman, former Chief Naval Architect of the U.S. Navy, said: “As the US Navy faces an expanding array of global challenges, it will be vital to ensure future classes of navy ships meet their mission requirements and be affordable, flexible and sustainable. The panel represents some of the leading expertise in the US Navy and it was a privilege to be able to hear their perspectives on how the navy will need to continue to adapt to maintain its edge in the decades to come.”
Prior to the panel Captain Barry Tibbitts USN, retired, a former Director, NAVSEA Ship Design Group, gave an overview of 50 Years of warship acquisitions. The event was followed by a presentation from experienced shipyard executive Pete Jaquith, titled A Shipbuilder's Perspective: Modern Warship Design and Manufacturing Practices.
