IMI Cuts Steel on First Self-Elevating Drilling Unit in a Series for ARO Drilling

(Dubai) International Maritime Industries (IMI), Lamprell Energy Ltd, and ARO Drilling held a steel cutting ceremony in the UAE on 18 May, 2020 in the Lamprell Hamriyah facility for ARO2005. This is the first of two in a series of Self-Elevating Drilling Units (SEDUs) being built for ARO Drilling with delivery in 2022. The program for additional new rig deliveries continues until 2030.

The ABS Classed rigs will be built collaboratively between IMI and Lamprell at Lamprell’s UAE facilities.

Most of the work will be performed at Lamprell’s UAE facilities with handover performed by IMI in Saudi Arabia.

ABS has been using its Global Engineering capabilities to perform engineering plan reviews for the SEDUs and will harness similar Global Survey capacity to certify, survey and commission the units’ structures and machinery.

Future rigs will be built by IMI in their new facilities that are located with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  The facility, the largest in the region is scheduled to open in 2021 and will be fully operational in 2022 with capabilities and infrastructure to build multiple Offshore Jack Up Rigs, VLCCs, Oil Tankers and Offshore Support Vessels.

ARO Drilling, is a 50/50 joint venture between London-based global drilling contractor Valaris plc and Saudi Arabian energy company Saudi Aramco.
