Former NEJM Exec to Head Business Operations for JAMA, JAMA Network and AM News

CHICAGO – October 17, 2012 – The American Medical Association (AMA) announced today that Thomas J. Easley will join the organization as senior vice president of periodic publications with responsibility as publisher of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), JAMA Network, and American Medical News. Easley will report directly to Chief Operations Officer Bernie Hengesbaugh and begin his duties Dec. 1.

Easley joins the AMA after a 13-year career with the NEJM Group where he enjoyed a long and accomplished tenure, most recently as publisher and managing director of the New England Journal of Medicine. In previous roles there, Easley was responsible for strategy, marketing, global business development and overall operating performance for NEJM across all products and customer markets.

“Tom’s impressive accomplishments in medical publishing and his strong sense of business and strategy make him the perfect candidate to raise that stature of JAMA, JAMA Network and AM News even higher,” said James L. Madara, M.D., executive vice president and chief executive officer of the AMA. “It is a very important time for AMA publishing operations with the new branding, investments and strategy for the JAMA Network, and we are excited to have someone of Tom’s caliber guiding these efforts.”

“The chance to work with accomplished editors and a talented staff at both JAMA and AM News is a once-in-a-career opportunity and I can’t wait to get started,” Easley said. "It’s my good fortune to go from one great organization to another at such an important time of advances and change in medicine and publishing.”

Earlier in his career, Easley served as editorial director for Mosby Consumer Health. He has served as an acquisitions editor at Elsevier Science Publishing and as a sales director at Time Inc. In addition to his direct professional responsibilities, Tom has been active in professional publishing groups, serving on the Executive Council of the Association of American Publishers/Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division. He holds a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University.

JAMA is the mostly widely distributed scientific medical journal in the world with a circulation of approximately 300,000. AM News has a circulation of approximately 250,000.
