Minnesota Physician Maya Babu Elected to the AMA Board of Trustees

CHICAGO - June 18, 2013 - The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced Maya Babu, M.D., MBA, a resident in neurosurgery in Rochester, Minn., has been elected to the AMA Board of Trustees. Dr. Babu’s election to the resident position on the board was confirmed at the AMA Annual Meeting.
 
“I am thrilled and honored to serve as the resident representative on the AMA’s Board of Trustees, and I will be a champion for young physicians to have the opportunity to enter all practice types,” said Dr. Babu. “In this time of rapid health care change, I will strive to ensure that changes made will not undermine the patient-physician relationship.”
 
Dr. Babu holds a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She graduated from both Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School.

Dr. Babu has served in numerous capacities at the state, national and specialty levels, including her current roles as a member of the Minnesota Medical Association’s Board of Trustees, a member of Minnesota MedPAC’s Board of Directors and as the Chair of the National Resident Committee of the Association of Women Surgeons. Dr. Babu also has business experience, working as an associate in medical devices investment banking at Piper Jaffray and as a business development associate at Medtronic.

Dr. Babu has received several prestigious honors, including the Dean’s Award for leadership and community service at Harvard Business School, the Harry Truman National Scholarship for Public Service and the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration Award for Excellence in Young Leadership.
