CHICAGO - June 18, 2013 - David O. Barbe, M.D., MHA, a family physician from Mountain Grove, Mo., was elected today to a second term on the governing board of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization. Dr. Barbe was re-elected by physicians and medical students who were gathered in Chicago for the 2013 AMA Annual Meeting.

“It is a great honor to continue serving on the AMA’s Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Barbe. “I look forward to supporting physicians as the AMA works to advance the health of the nation and shape a better future for America’s patients.”

Dr. Barbe was first elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 2009. For the last year, he has served as chair-elect of the AMA Board of Trustees. His re-election to the AMA Board ensures his expected transition to the office of board chair when trustees gather tomorrow for their first post-election meeting.

Prior to his election to the AMA Board, Dr. Barbe was a member Council on Medical Service, an influential advisory committee to the AMA, and served as its chair from 2008 to 2009. As a member of the council, Dr. Barbe participated in the development of AMA policy related to coverage of the uninsured, health care system reform, Medicare reform and health insurance market reform.
Dr. Barbe has previous experience as a board chair for a medical society, serving as head of the governing board for the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) in 2003. He also served as MSMA president in 2005.

Dr. Barbe has practiced family medicine in his hometown of Mountain Grove for 30 years, delivering comprehensive medical care to the residents of South-central Missouri. After 15 years in independent practice, he merged his group with Mercy Clinic (formerly St. John’s Clinic), Springfield, Mo., and now serves as the regional division president of the 650-physician multi-specialty integrated group. He also serves on the executive management team of Mercy Health (formerly St. John’s Health System).

Dr. Barbe received his medical degree and Master of Health Administration from the University of Missouri. He continues to live and practice in his hometown of Mountain Grove. He and his wife, Debbie, have two children and six grandchildren.
