University of Toledo Physician Carl Sirio Re-Elected to the AMA Board of Trustees
CHICAGO - June 10, 2014 - Carl A. Sirio, M.D., a practitioner of critical care medicine and medical educator at the University of Toledo, has been re-elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation's largest and most influential physician organization.
“I am honored to be re-elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Sirio. “I value the opportunity to give back some measure of myself to improve our health care system for the benefit of the patients we serve.”
Dr. Sirio, a native of Pennsylvania, has been a board member since 2010. On the board, he serves on the Executive Committee and also has roles on the finance, membership and business strategies committees.
Prior to his election to the AMA board he served on the AMA Council on Medical Education, where he chaired the Initiative to Transform Medical Education. He has represented the AMA to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, where he was partially responsible for both the new standards related to building greater diversity in medicine, and to understanding the impact of the learning environments of medical students.
Dr. Sirio also served in the AMA House of Delegates as a delegate from Pennsylvania. He co-founded the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative, which was designed to improve care over a large geographic area, and is now nationally recognized for having done so. He was also the recipient of several large grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, equaling more than $6.5 million in total, for work designed to foster meaningful improvement in the care of patients.
In addition, Dr. Sirio now serves as a member of the Board of Commissioners for The Joint Commission and Measures Applications Partnership sponsored by the National Quality Forum (NQF) as part of his work in quality of care and performance improvement.
Dr. Sirio lives in Pittsburgh, and serves as senior associate dean and chief clinical officer at the University of Toledo College of Medicine.
