Kennedy to receive inaugural Leadership, Mentorship & Public Advocacy for Women in Medical Science Award
American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery to present award at Annual Conference in Boston
Wausau, WI – March 23, 2016 Victoria Reggie Kennedy is the recipient of the first Leadership, Mentorship & Public Advocacy for Women in Medical Science Award, presented by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS). She will receive the award at the Celebration of ASLMS Women in Energy-Based Devices event to be held April 1, 2016 at ASLMS 2016 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Kennedy has been a leading voice on the empowerment of women and girls in our society. She is an advocate for expanding medical research and for access to health care for all Americans. She is senior counsel in the corporate and securities practice at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, as well as President of the Board and co-founder of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
In addition to her law practice, board service and non-profit leadership roles, Kennedy has served in key strategic and political roles on issues ranging from health, education, economic opportunity and involvement in the political process. She has received numerous awards for her advocacy of healthcare for women.
“Given her far-reaching efforts on projects that have encouraged and assisted women to achieve excellence in science and medicine, I can think of no better recipient for this inaugural award,” said Tina Alster, MD, who will present the award to Mrs. Kennedy. Dr. Alster is the founding director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and is a clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Juanita Anders, PhD led the development of the ASLMS Women in Energy-Based Devices group in 2015. “We wanted to bring together the extraordinary mix of women’s specialties that are a part of ASLMS, including scientists, clinicians and allied health practitioners,” said Dr. Anders. “Our goal is to honor, advance and connect women in our field, in addition to encouraging young women to choose STEM careers, particularly those involving energy-based technologies.” Dr. Anders is affiliated with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as a Professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics and Professor of Neuroscience. She served as ASLMS President from 2014-2015.
This is the second year the Celebration of ASLMS Women in Energy-Based Devices event will be held at the ASLMS Annual Conference and the first year for the Leadership, Mentorship & Public Advocacy for Women in Medical Science Award. The event and award are sponsored by Valeant Pharmaceuticals North America, LLC.
