The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) is pleased to announce the launch of its new open-access journal, Advances in Radiation Oncology, and the selection of its Founding Editor Robert C. Miller, MD, MBA. Advances will begin accepting manuscripts by the end of the summer with studies to be published by late 2015. Miller is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Fla.; Medical Director of Mayo Clinic Operations in Northfield, Minn.; and Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea-Austin. Advances is ASTRO’s third peer-reviewed scientific journal, joining the International Journal of Radiation Oncology • Biology • Physics (Red Journal) and Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO).

“ASTRO is proud Robert will be leading the launch of this important new venture, Advances. His extensive and continuing research and clinical career, as well as his publishing experience, will be instrumental in this journal’s success,” said Bruce G. Haffty, MD, FASTRO, Chair of ASTRO’s Board of Directors, and Professor and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. “Robert’s vision for this new journal, his passion for rigorous research and his remarkable business acumen will enable Advances to be a substantive platform for important radiation oncology research, progress and innovation.”

Advances will publish original reports on novel retrospectives, hypothesis-generating series, institutional series, natural history of disease, analytics and systems innovations. The journal will also publish teaching cases and brief communications to capture innovations in radiation oncology. All published papers will be available online, free of charge for anyone to read, download and share. Authors will pay a fee for each manuscript accepted for publication to cover the costs of peer review, indexing, typesetting and online hosting in perpetuity. Fees range from $750 for a case report submitted by an ASTRO member to $2,000 for an original report from a non-ASTRO member. In addition, papers not accepted by the Red Journal and PRO may be passed to Advances for consideration; the original paper and any reviews from Red Journal or PRO editors will cascade to Advances’ editors.

Miller’s career at Mayo Clinic began with his residency in 1994; he then advanced to instructor, assistant professor, and associate professor to full professor in 2011. His numerous career honors include 2014 Mayo School of Health Sciences Outstanding Physician/Scientist Award; the Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA’s) Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award in 1998; ASTRO’s Resident Clinical/Basic Research Award in 1997; the Young Oncologist Essay Award in Radiation Oncology from the American Radium Society in 1997; and The Davenport Fellowship in Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic in 1996.

Miller earned his medical degree, with distinction, from the University of Kentucky and his Master of Business Administration from Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom. Miller’s vast efforts in research include co-authoring 144 publications, editorials and book chapters; serving as the Primary Investigator of eight multi-institutional clinical trials and two Mayo Clinic trials; and mentoring 41 radiation oncology residents and medical students to-date. He also founded the open-access journal Rare Tumors.

“I am honored and excited to accept this new role as the Editor of Advances in Radiation Oncology for ASTRO,” said Miller. “I am confident that Advances will become a valuable forum for fellow researchers around the world and the public at-large. Advances will contribute to the scientific literature, which is critical as we strive to discover the latest breakthroughs in radiation oncology cancer care. Advances will have a special focus on practice transformation. It will feature articles devoted to the impact of bioinformatics, healthcare reform, analytics and other topics that have the potential to fundamentally change the practice of radiation oncology.”

The editorial team for Advances is currently being assembled, and additional logistic and process decisions for the journal are being finalized. All content for this new journal will be managed by the Advances editorial team and published by Elsevier.
