The
American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF) today announced their partnership with digital health and wellness leader Everyday Health in support of the first national Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA, October 17, 2012. As the exclusive media sponsor for BRA Day USA, Everyday Health is taking a leading role to raise awareness of breast reconstruction options following mastectomy, as 7 out of 10 women treated for breast cancer are never told about their reconstruction options.

The U.S. and 20 other countries will join together for BRA Day on October 17. BRA Day USA is one piece of an ongoing campaign to promote education, awareness and access regarding breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the ASPS and The PSF.

“We are thrilled to be a sponsor of BRA Day USA and the Breast Reconstruction Awareness campaign,” said David Dean, VP of Strategic Partnerships for Everyday Health.  “With mothers, friends and sisters who have experienced breast cancer, mastectomy and reconstruction, this noble cause is not only aligned with the principles of Everyday Health, but is very personal to us as well.  At Everyday Health, we want to make the public aware of the breast reconstruction options that are available to women, so they feel both beautiful and empowered to live happy, full lives after breast cancer.”

ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, feels equally honored to be working with Everyday Health. “With their support, and their continued commitment to women’s health and wellness, the ASPS and The PSF hope to fully inform women about their breast reconstruction options and finally, ‘close the loop’ on these distressing statistics.”

Over the next two years award-winning recording artist, New York Times bestselling author and humanitarian Jewel will work with the ASPS/The PSF as their national spokesperson, advocating on behalf of BRA Day USA through media appearances, public service announcements, a dedicated BRA Day USA song entitled, “Flower,” and benefit concert event.
