The Plastic Surgery Foundation Announces Call for Grant Applications To Assist Women in Need of Breast Reconstruction
Proceeds from BRA Day USA Provide Funding to Raise Breast Reconstruction Awareness, Charitable Care

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF) is now accepting applications for its 2014 Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Fund grant programs. The PSF will award grants to non-profit organizations that provide charitable surgical care to breast reconstruction patients in financial need or that are committed to increasing breast reconstruction awareness and education to women and their families. The deadline for applications is April 4, 2014.
“The BRA Fund grants enable The PSF to raise awareness about breast reconstruction options for women diagnosed with breast cancer as well as provide access to these procedures,” said Kevin Chung, MD, president of The PSF. “The grants will have a significant impact on women facing one of the most difficult times in their lives – a breast cancer diagnosis – by providing them with the necessary knowledge, tools, and financial assistance they need in order to undergo breast reconstruction, the final step in their breast cancer treatment.”
The PSF is currently accepting applications for the following 2014 BRA Fund grant programs:
Breast Reconstruction Surgery Charitable Care Grants
The PSF will award grants, up to $15,000, to U.S. based, tax-exempt public 501 (c)(3) charities that have demonstrated a commitment to providing breast reconstruction surgery charity care. Grant funds must be used to directly support surgery or the surgical care expenses for women having breast reconstruction, particularly for uninsured and underinsured women in underserved communities. Special funding has been allocated to support organizations that serve patients residing in the Salt Lake City, Utah or Newark, New Jersey areas.
Breast Reconstruction Surgery Public Awareness Grants
The PSF will award grants, up to $10,000, to U.S. based, tax-exempt public 501 (c)(3) charities that have demonstrated a commitment to increasing the awareness of breast reconstruction surgery. Grants are awarded to charities with a demonstrated commitment to developing and implementing projects and programs for the purpose of raising the awareness of breast reconstruction surgery options in the community. Special consideration will be given to organizations that have previously hosted or will be hosting BRA Day USA events in 2014.
Applications should be submitted to research@plasticsurgery.org by April 4, 2014. Announcements will be made by June 1, 2014.
Grants will be awarded for the period beginning July 1, 2014 and ending June 30, 2015. Grants awarded for the 2014-2015 cycle must be used to support programs, surgeries or care that occur within this timeframe.
This is the second year The PSF has awarded funding through its two BRA Fund grant programs. In 2013, eleven philanthropic organizations were awarded funding totaling $155,000 from either the charitable care or public awareness grant categories. Since its inception, the BRA Fund has raised more than $710,000 to support research, projects, programs, and the charitable surgical care of women in need of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.
The BRA Fund and its grant programs were established through proceeds generated from the nation’s first BRA Day USA held in October 2012. BRA Day USA occurs annually in October and is part of a Breast Reconstruction Awareness campaign sponsored by The PSF and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). A large portion of the proceeds generated from BRA Day USA 2013 came from the generous support of major sponsors including Sientra, Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, and CareCredit, as well as through numerous fundraising events held by ASPS members across the country.
