Violations Per Camera Per Month Drop By 60 percent

St. Louis, MO –Driver behavior at St. Louis red-light safety cameras monitored intersections continues to change according to a recent analysis by American Traffic Solutions (ATS).  ATS, Missouri’s and the nation’s leading red-light safety camera provider, found that the number of red-light running violations captured at ATS monitored intersections has fallen significantly as drivers have become more accustomed to increased red-light enforcement.

Most importantly, the analysis found that fewer and fewer vehicles are being issued multiple violations.  Eighty four percent (84%) of the vehicle owners who received and paid one red-light running citation since the program started in May 2007 never received another citation.

Similarly, in the six years since cameras were first installed, the average number of citations issued per camera per month citywide has decreased by nearly 60 percent despite new cameras being installed.

The Missouri Court of Appeals of Eastern Missouri recently upheld the constitutionality of red-light safety camera programs, and affirmed the City of St. Louis’ authority to regulate traffic safety as an appropriate function of the city’s police power.  This ruling was consistent with rulings by both State and Federal courts in Missouri upholding the constitutionality and legality of red light safety camera ordinances of other jurisdictions in the state.
