Viewers will see how the camera system works, how violations are captured, what safeguards are in place to ensure accurate processing, and the criteria police follow when deciding to issue a violation. Also explained is the distribution process for each dollar collected from a paid ticket. Among those recipients are state trauma care centers and cutting edge research into cures for paralysis.
Florida is the 3rd deadliest state in the nation for red-light running fatalities. In 2012, red-light runners caused 4,803 traffic injuries in Florida, costing communities more than $646 million. According to a recent Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA) report, fatalities have fallen 49 percent at intersections with red-light safety cameras.
A recent Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) report found that 95% of the drivers receiving a violation did not receive a second. These results indicate red-light safety cameras are operating as designed, which is to reduce the number of right-angle intersection crashes by changing driver behavior through traffic law enforcement.
