Speed Camera is First Authorized and Approved by MoDOT

ST. LOUIS - The Village of Calverton Park is the first city in the State of Missouri to be approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) to install speed cameras on a state highway.  The Village has signed a contract with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to install a speed safety camera system in a school zone occupied by the Walnut Grove Elementary school on North Florissant Road, highway N in the Village of Calverton Park.  The cameras will be active only during school hours or at times designated by MODOT or the school. A certified police officer will review all violations, and a 30 day public awareness campaign will be conducted prior to the activation of the cameras.

The Chief of Police for the Village of Calverton Park stated that he was pleased to have the first MODOT approved speed camera location in the state. He also stated that this school zone location has been identified as a location where speeding is a problem and that speeding at that location presents a danger to the school children attending Walnut Grove School.  MODOT confirmed this when they approved the location.

Vehicle speeds in the Walnut Grove Elementary School Zone were tested earlier this spring and the results were concerning. Speeds in the 25 mph school zone ranged from 36 mph to as high as 52 mph.  There were also nine speed violations in a four-minute span.
