Carroll County Schools Begins School Bus Photo Enforcement to Keep Schoolchildren Safe
Carroll County, GA —Beginning Monday, August 13, motorists who travel some of Carroll County’s roads could receive a violation notice if they illegally pass a stopped school bus.
In an effort to use technology to make the streets safer for schoolchildren, Carroll County Schools has installed high-resolution cameras to the front and rear driver’s side of school buses to capture motorists who illegally drive by stopped school buses while their stop arm is extended and schoolchildren are boarding or disembarking the bus. When the stop arm is deployed, the system detects if a vehicle passes the stopped school bus within the enforcement zone.
“Too many drivers choose to ignore the school bus stop arm and think it is acceptable to pass when children are unloading and loading,” said Jackie Coffee, Director of Transportation for Carroll County Schools. “With this program, we hope to significantly reduce the number of these types of violations which will increase the overall safety of our students.”
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is working together with Carroll County Schools by reviewing violation video and license plate images for final approval prior to a citation being issued. In Georgia, the penalty for a violation will warrant the vehicle’s owner a $300 fine for the first violation, a $750 fine for the second, and a third violation in a five-year period will result in a $1,000 fine.
“This program enhances our enforcement abilities while freeing up police resources to focus on other areas,” said Sheriff Terry Langley of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s another way for us to protect the lives of the children who ride a school bus to and from school every day.”
The registered owner who receives the notice has several options to resolve the violation: (1) pay the fine either by mail, phone using a credit card through an automated, (2) pay online at www.ViolationInfo.com, (3) contest the violation by appearing at the Summons date on the violation, or (4) Submit a notarized Affidavit of Non-Liability to the Court stating that the vehicle’s registered owner was not driving the car at the time the violation was recorded, or the vehicle was stolen. Violators may also view images and a video clip of the violation provided by the vendor, American Traffic Solutions, Inc. at www.ViolationInfo.com using the notice number and PIN provided on the citation.
School bus stop arm technology is just one way the Carroll County Schools is making local streets safer for children. The program is administered and maintained by American Traffic Solutions, Inc.
