Trenton, NJ –According to new data obtained from the Rutgers, Plan4Safety crash database, right-angle crashes continue to decline at intersections in New Jersey currently using American Traffic Solutions’ (ATS) red-light safety cameras. Additionally, nearly 9 out of 10 vehicles receiving a violation have not received a second.

Crash data compiled from 26 intersections in 15 townships with ATS red-light cameras in operation for at least one year showed total right-angle crashes decreased an average of 11 percent. A look at the 12 intersections with cameras in place for two years indicates an even greater reduction with right-angle crashes decreasing 59 percent from the first year of use to the second.

Right-angle crashes at red-light camera intersections with cameras in place for one year fell from 64-57.  Right-angle crashes at locations with cameras deployed for two years have fallen from 34 to 12. At the same time, right angle-crashes at at control intersections without red-light safety cameras increased by 46 percent from 26 to 38.     Similarly, the number of violations issued per camera per month has fallen by nearly 60 percent since September of 2010.

“These numbers are consistent with what communities across the country are experiencing.  Red-light cameras improve safety at dangerous intersections by changing driver behavior. These results show the New Jersey program is working. In programs throughout the state, violations and crashes continue to decline,” said Charles Territo, spokesperson for American Traffic Solutions.

Red-light safety cameras are designed to enhance traffic safety by changing driver behavior.  Right-angle crashes, those most often caused by red-light runners are most likely to cause injury or death. The cameras assist police officers with the enforcement of traffic laws, and reducing the number of violations.

Statewide, there are 25 municipalities with red-light safety cameras. Townships with ATS cameras include: Brick, Deptford, East Brunswick, East Windsor, Glassboro, Gloucester, Jersey City, Lawrence, Linden, Monroe, Palisades Park, Piscataway, Pohatcong, Rahway, Roselle Park, Union, Wayne and Woodbridge.
