Georgetown Independent School District Looks to American Traffic Solutions to Help Put a Stop to School Bus Stop Arm Running

Georgetown, TX- The Georgetown Independent School District Board has approved an agreement with American Traffic Solutions to bring school bus stop arm cameras to Georgetown ISD school buses.  The school district and the Georgetown Police Department will partner with American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the leading photo enforcement provider in North America, to deploy CrossingGuard®, ATS’ solution to help the school district address the growing problem of illegal passing of school buses.

In 2013, according to a Stop Arm Violation Survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) drivers passed school buses illegally over 9,800 times in one day statewide, putting millions of Texas children in jeopardy.  As a result, researchers estimate that nearly 3 million violations occur during a typical school year in the state of Texas.

“The safety of our children is our number one priority,” said Walter Prothro, Transportation Director for Georgetown Independent School District. “By leveraging technology, we hope to change driver behaviors and reduce violations to keep our children safe.”

In response to this alarming trend, cameras will be installed on Georgetown ISD school buses at no cost to the district. The CrossingGuard® school bus arm safety solution, mounts high-resolution cameras to the front and rear driver’s side of a school bus to capture the entire violation event.  When the stop arm is deployed, the system detects if a vehicle passes the stopped school bus within the enforcement zone.

The violation video and license plate images are then reviewed by the Georgetown Police Department for approval prior to a notice of violation being issued.  A violation is a civil penalty that will warrant the vehicle’s owner a fine of $300.

“We look forward to this collaboration between the Georgetown Police Department, Georgetown ISD and American Traffic Solutions,” said Chief of Police, Wayne Nero.  “This new technology addresses the needs of our citizens by detecting and enforcing these dangerous violations, which threaten the safety of our children.”
