Mansfield, TXVideo from a Mansfield Independent School District (ISD) School Bus Stop Arm Pilot Program illustrates the problem of illegal stop arm running.  The videos are just a few examples from the nearly 50 stop arm running violations captured during Mansfield ISDs two month pilot program.

American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the nation’s leader in road safety camera technology, provided Mansfield ISD with its CrossingGuard® school bus stop arm camera solution  to help monitor the extent of the stop arm running problem.  Cameras mounted on the driver’s side of the school bus automatically detect when a vehicle illegally passes an extended stop arm. Images of a vehicle’s license plate and a video showing the violation event provide law enforcement the evidence they need to effectively prosecute these violations.

“School bus stop arm cameras are being used throughout the country to help law enforcement address the problem of school bus stop arm running,” said Charles Territo, ATS Senior Vice President Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs. “ATS is pleased to partner with Mansfield ISD and schools throughout the country to help bring awareness to the issue and hopefully help change driver behavior.”

In 2012 according to a statewide Stop Arm Violation Survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) Texas drivers illegally passed school buses more than 8,600 times in one day.

Under the pilot, no warnings or citations were issued.  The video can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZlmeyzvkJk&feature=youtu.be.
