SCOTTSDALE, AZ – New data from user cities across the State of Florida reaffirms earlier studies that show red-light safety cameras decrease traffic crashes. The report from the Miami-Dade County Office of Commission Auditor (OCA) provides overwhelming evidence that red-light safety cameras are effective in reducing dangerous collisions. The findings are consistent with a report released in early January by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The OCA gathered program data from 22 Miami-Dade County communities utilizing the photo enforcement technology. Results highlighted in this comprehensive report include:

  • The city of Aventura reports a 57% reduction in collisions at intersections utilizing RLC since 2010.
  • Miami Beach notes a17% decrease in crashes at the four intersections equipped with the technology, while reporting an 8% increase in crashes citywide from FY 2009/2010 to FY 2010/2011.
  • All 12 intersections with RLC in Miami Gardens show a decrease in crashes totaling a cumulative reduction of 68% fewer collisions since the program’s implementation.
  • Crashes at the intersection of NW 36th @ 42nd Avenue are down 23% in Miami Springs.

Red-light safety camera programs are saving lives on the roads in Florida by reducing crashes and providing hope to the men, women and children living with spinal cord injuries. The Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, dedicates a portion of every red-light running ticket fine to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Through December 2012, reckless drivers have contributed more than $3.6 million to this invaluable research. Along with providing assistance to The Miami Project, the Florida Department of Health reports that since the passage of the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, red-light safety camera fines have generated over $7.3 million in funds distributed to 22 verified trauma centers across the state.

Public advocacy groups, law enforcement leaders, national and federal safety organizations, as well as more than 600 communities across North America are changing driver behavior by using red-light safety cameras to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities that result from red-light running.
