AmeriHealth Caritas President and CEO Michael A. Rashid to Retire, Board Chair Paul A. Tufano Named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
AmeriHealth Caritas announced today that, after nearly 20 years with the company and four years as its president and chief executive officer (CEO), Michael A. Rashid is retiring from these roles. Paul A. Tufano, Independence Blue Cross (IBC) executive vice president and chairman of the Board of AmeriHealth Caritas, remains chairman and has been appointed CEO of AmeriHealth Caritas, effective March 31, 2014. Rashid will serve as special advisor to IBC president and CEO Daniel J. Hilferty through year end.
During his nearly 20 years with AmeriHealth Caritas, Rashid has been integral in positioning the company as a national leader in providing health care solutions for those most in need. He was instrumental in developing three new product lines and expanding the number of members served from 300,000 in two states to nearly five million in 15 states and the District of Columbia. In September, Rashid’s longtime leadership in the Medicaid managed care industry was recognized by the White House. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius appointed Rashid to the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health.
Tufano joined IBC in 1999 as senior vice president and general counsel. In 2010, he was promoted to executive vice president and received additional responsibility as president of Government Markets, overseeing the company's interests in Medicare, CHIP and Special Care that serve more than 200,000 lives. In 2011, he assumed responsibility for Public Affairs, which includes Government and Community Affairs, as well as the Independence Blue Cross Foundation. At that time, his role also expanded further to include chairman of the board for AmeriHealth Caritas. Tufano also has a distinguished career in public and community service. Before joining IBC, he was general counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Governor Tom Ridge and was a member of both the Governor’s cabinet and senior staff. He serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees at Villanova University, and is the Chair of the Board of Directors for The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
As part of the leadership transition, Tufano has appointed Anne Morrissey president of the company and she will also continue as chief operating officer. Morrissey joined AmeriHealth Caritas in 2004. In 2005, she was named chief of staff for Rashid and later added the title of president of the Pennsylvania markets. Morrissey’s role expanded to chief operating officer in 2008 and executive vice president and chief operating officer in 2010. Morrissey also serves on various civic organizations and boards.
“Michael is to be congratulated for his leadership in improving the health of millions of Americans during his esteemed career," said Tufano. “I look forward to honoring Michael’s legacy and advancing the company’s growth trajectory as we continue to provide access to quality health care for those most in need across the nation.”
“I had the pleasure of working with Michael as my partner at AmeriHealth Caritas for many years. His counsel was invaluable and his commitment unwavering. I’ve admired how he’s guided the company through this time of tremendous growth," said Hilferty. “I am personally grateful for Michael's service and excited about the future of AmeriHealth Caritas under Paul's direction."
“It has been a privilege to have spent nearly 20 years with this great company, and an honor to have led it as CEO the past four years,” expressed AmeriHealth Caritas President and CEO Michael Rashid. “Day in and day out, our 4,000 employees work tirelessly to extend the hand of hope to those most in need and connect them with life-giving and life-saving care. There is no better way to spend a life than in service to others. I look forward to watching AmeriHealth Caritas continue to transform thousands of more lives for many years to come. I can think of nobody better to take the reins than Paul Tufano.”
