Physician Executive Fred Hill Joins AmeriHealth Caritas as Chief Medical Officer, Southern Region
AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need, announced today that it has appointed Fred Hill, M.D., M.B.A., as chief medical officer, Southern Region. Hill will lead medical affairs for its Medicaid health plans in the region, AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana and First Choice by Select Health of South Carolina. He will report to J. Michael Jernigan, regional president.
Hill assumes the role currently held by Fred Volkman, M.D., who will be retiring effective March 31, 2014.
Hill is a board-certified family practitioner with more than 30 years of clinical and administrative experience, much of it with Medicaid insurers. He comes to AmeriHealth Caritas from Aetna, where he served as chief medical officer for its Florida Medicaid product and most recently for its entire Medicaid line of business. While at Aetna, Hill created a medical management dashboard to improve the company’s ability to identify trends and needed interventions.
Hill previously held clinical quality, utilization management and corporate network contracting leadership roles at WellCare, a national managed care organization specializing in Medicaid and Medicare. He has also spent more than 15 years as a practicing physician and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Hill received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo College of Medicine), where he also completed residencies in surgery and family practice. He earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
