Physician Executive Thomas James III, M.D., Joins AMFC as Corporate Medical Director, Medical Policy
Philadelphia, Pa. — AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies (AMFC) announced today that Thomas James III, M.D., has joined its medical leadership team as corporate medical director, Medical Policy, effective today. Dr. James, a veteran physician executive with more than 30 years of experience in managing health plan medical policies, will report to Andrea Gelzer, M.D., AMFC’s senior vice president and corporate chief medical officer.
In this newly created position, Dr. James will oversee the development of AMFC’s corporate medical policies and will also serve as the chair of AMFC’s corporate medical policy committee.
Dr. James joins AMFC from Humana, where he served as the health insurer’s national network medical director since January 2009. Previously, he was Humana’s national accounts healthcare advisor and the chief medical officer for its Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee plans. Dr. James also has held medical leadership roles with Anthem Blue Cross of Kentucky, Traveler’s Health Network, Sentara Health Plan and HealthAmerica.
Dr. James is a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed internal medicine residencies at Temple University Hospital and Pennsylvania Hospital, as well as a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
