AMETEK Delivers Nuclear-Qualified Pressure Transmitters for Lovissa NPP LARA Project

ROCHESTER, NY, U.S.A. – AMETEK Power Instruments recently completed the manufacture of Gulton-Statham (GSP) nuclear pressure transmitters for the Lovissa 2 nuclear power plant project in Finland.  The P3200 nuclear–qualified pressure transmitters are identical to those used on the Lovissa I project completed in 2015.

The Loivissa nuclear power plants utilize Russian VVER-440-/213 reactors. Siemens AG was contracted to upgrade I&C (instrumentation and control) systems of the Reactor Protection System as part of the Lovissa Automation Renewal (LARA) project.

STUK’s (the Finish radiation and nuclear safety authority) safety classification for this project required Safety Class 2 & 3 transmitters with diversity of measurement.  Along with increasing the safety of the system with diversity of measurement, Siemens also needed to ensure that its suppliers have a quality system certified as KTA 1401 and products qualified to KTA-3505.

Siemens selected AMETEK’s GSP pressure transmitters for their ability to offer a different technology type for measurement diversity. AMETEK’s P3200 nuclear-qualified pressure transmitters are found on the safety systems of nearly every major nuclear design type in the world.

At the heart of the AMETEK P3200 Series is a strain gage sensor with a design based on proven thin-film strain gage technology that converts mechanical force into electrical resistance. The electronics that convert the output to a 4-20mA signal is housed in a compact hermetically sealed stainless steel enclosure. In addition, AMETEK built the 1E-qualified transmitters with special quick disconnect electrical connectors.

AMETEK also hosted Siemens and FORTUM, the Finish operator of the Lovissa plants, at a factory acceptance test held in the AMETEK manufacturing facility in Rochester, NY.

“We were pleased that Siemens selected AMETEK given the stringent requirements demanded in its nuclear application for the LARA project,” notes Brian Hoffmann, Divisional Vice and Business Unit Manager for AMETEK Power Instruments. “The project and quality audits went smoothly, and we look forward to working with Siemens on future phases of this project.”
