Anglia wins Cree SiC power product line
Wisbech, UK, 15 October 2012 – Anglia Components today announced that it has been appointed as UK distributor for Cree® Silicon Carbide power MOSFET and Schottky Diode devices. The line complements Anglia’s exceptionally strong analog franchise portfolio, which already includes Analog Devices, Intersil and STMicroelectronics.
Commenting, Anglia Components Marketing Director, Semiconductors, John Bowman, said, “Cree MOSFETs and Schottky diodes use the market leading Cree Silicon Carbide technology (SiC). This enables higher voltage, faster switching speed and better efficiency than traditional MOSFETs and Schottky diodes which are based on Silicon technology. Cree strengthens our offering at the higher power end of the market, and allows us to provide solutions for customers in the renewable energy and motor control fields especially.”
Mark Pinnock, Sales Manager Power Northern Europe, of Cree added, “Cree power semiconductor technology is innovative and leading edge – we hold over 200 patents worldwide in this technology field. Anglia has a strong relationship with Cree for LED products, but the customer base and the design challenges for our power semiconductor products are very different. We made the appointment because Anglia demonstrated they have technical expertise and relationships to successfully take this exceptionally innovative portfolio of devices to the UK and Eire market.”
The superior performance of silicon carbide makes Cree Power devices more efficient than similar products using silicon. Specifically, it offers ten times the breakdown field of standard silicon, giving lower specific on-resistance and faster switching at the same breakdown voltage. It also has three times the thermal conductivity of silicon, allowing higher current densities, and three times the bandgap, for higher temperature operation.
Nick Bourne, power specialist within Anglia’s Field Applications Engineering team, pointed out that, “The use of a more energy efficient technology like SiC not only reduces the operating cost of the end product, but also simplifies thermal management, as it reduces the waste heat generated in a design. Typical applications include renewable energy conversion, electric vehicles, industrial inverters, battery chargers and welding equipment.”
Anglia Lighting will continue to distribute Cree LED devices in the UK.Anglia is the UK’s leading independent authorised distributor of semiconductors, optoelectronics, interconnect, and passive and electromechanical components. The company is a signatory of the ADS SC21 programme and holds AS9120, ISO9001, ISO14001 accreditations and IECQ-CECC qualification. Anglia’s exceptional technical support spans a fast sampling service, telephone advice from product specialists, on-site visits from field applications engineers and, ultimately, electronics design. An in-house team of designers adds expert resources to customers' design teams, helps reduce final product costs and accelerates development times. Anglia stocks over 700 million components from 500,000 product lines in the UK, and streamlines its customer’s logistics and reduces costs through KAN-BAN, EDI, and customer-dedicated inventory.
