An event to help people make healthier choices when dining out has been hailed a success after the owner of a local fitness studio teamed up with a popular Leicester restaurant to host Dining on a Diet.

Joe Hanney, who owns U Fit Studio on Barkby Road, worked with Indian restaurant Chutney Ivy, on Halford Street, and Jenny Cross of Cross Productions to set up the Dining on a Diet experience, which attracted 55 guests, including former Leicester City player, Steve Walsh.

Joe created the event after a number of his clients expressed having difficulties with maintaining a healthy diet when eating out.

Joe comments: “Many of my clients told me how hard it was to make healthy choices when dining out, so I realised there was an opportunity to create an event that would help to take the confusion out of eating out. There was particular confusion and lack of knowledge about Indian cuisine so involving Chutney Ivy and their expertise really helped.

“I am now working with an exclusive selection of restaurants to develop their existing menus in order to offer diners lower calorie or healthier options. We then invite diners to come and discover how eating in a restaurant doesn’t have to be a daunting or calorific experience for those who are on a diet or trying to eat healthier. It’s about educating people on making better choices when eating out, without feeling like they have to go without, so that might be swapping chips for sweet potato or choosing a dish that’s higher in protein.

“The chefs at Chutney Ivy were able to develop a delicious menu that was full of flavour but also low in calories and fat, and during the event we offered advice to diners on how to choose healthier options when dining in restaurants and when cooking at home.

“The event was sold out and the feedback we have had from everyone who attended has been fantastic. The enthusiasm they have shown demonstrates that there is a real need for events such as this. I am now working with other restaurants in the city to organise more Dining on a Diet events.”

In total, the Dining on a Diet events have so far attracted 150 attendees from across Leicestershire.

The next Dining on a Diet event will take place at The White Peacock on Wednesday 2ndSeptember, before the event moves to North Bar & Kitchen in November.
