Apetit Plc, press release 13.10.2020 at 10.00 a.m.

Apetit launches material efficiency review at Säkylä frozen food factory. The review systematically reviews the material flows of the production plant with the aim of finding concrete improvement measures that lead to the reduction of wastage, better utilization of side streams and cost savings.

“Material review is a good tool for us to further streamline operations and manage material flows. As a result, we combine two essential goals: to improve material efficiency and at the same time profitability, and to reduce the environmental impact of production,” says Ari Kulmala, Director, Production and Procurement at Apetit.

According to Kulmala, concrete measures have already been taken to improve material efficiency.

“During the current year, we have promoted the monitoring of material flows at various stages of production. Thanks to more efficient monitoring, we have a better understanding of, for example, water consumption and the use of raw materials,” he continues.

Implementation of the material review at the Säkylä plant is part of the material efficiency commitment in the food industry, to which Apetit joined in January 2020. The goals of the commitment are to improve the efficiency of raw material use, reduce the amount of mixed waste and reduce water consumption.

“Sustainable actions are one of Apetit's strategic focus areas. Material efficiency is a good example of how we approach the goals set for our corporate responsibility with concrete measures,” says Sanna Väisänen, Director, Corporate Communications and Sustainability.

The food industry’s materials efficiency commitment

The food industry’s materials efficiency commitment is aimed at reducing the environmental impacts arising from the production, distribution and consumption of food.

The commitment for the years 2019–2021 has been signed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of the Environment together with the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation, the Finnish Grocery Trade Association and the Finnish Packaging Association.
