Northern Norway has long captivated travellers with its midnight sun, dramatic peaks and endless coastline. This summer, the region offers even more reasons to slow down and explore. From world-class culture and Arctic wellness to spectacular wildlife encounters and unforgettable journeys along the coast, a range of new experiences invite visitors to discover a different side of Norway's north.

As travellers increasingly seek longer stays, quieter destinations and deeper connections with the places they visit, Northern Norway is responding with experiences rooted in nature, culture and local stories.

Culture, history and stories from the Far North
This summer, the historic fishing village of Nusfjord in Lofoten is partnering with Fotografiska, the internationally renowned photography museum, for a seasonal exhibition featuring two internationally acclaimed photographers. The collaboration gives visitors an exclusive preview of Fotografiska's future Oslo museum before it opens in 2028.

Beyond Lofoten, the Varanger region reveals another side of Northern Norway, where wildlife, coastal heritage and dramatic landscapes come together. Visit the seabird sanctuary of Hornøya, explore the award-winning Steilneset Memorial in Vardø, or drive the spectacular road to the abandoned fishing village of Hamningberg, where the Arctic landscape meets the Barents Sea.

The Arctic from the water
Some of Northern Norway's most memorable experiences begin at sea. In Bodø, the newly opened Hot & Salty sauna village has transformed the waterfront into a vibrant meeting place where visitors can alternate between steaming saunas and refreshing Arctic swims.

One of the region's highlights remains Trollfjord, which can be explored from both Lofoten and Vesterålen. From Svolvær, BRIM Explorer's silent hybrid-electric cruises offer a low-impact way to experience the fjord, while Fjord Cruise Vesterålen provides guided cruises through its dramatic narrow passages from neighbouring Vesterålen.

Further north, guided kayaking in Svalbard brings visitors close to glacier fronts and Arctic wildlife, while Tromsø continues to expand its collection of fjord experiences, including floating saunas, kayaking and evening cruises beneath the midnight sun.

Beyond the North Cape
A visit to North Cape has always been about reaching Europe's northern edge, but this summer there's even more to discover across Magerøya. Explore colourful fishing villages such as Skarsvåg, Gjesvær and Kamøyvær, join a bird safari to the spectacular Gjesværstappan nature reserve, or head out on the Barents Sea by RIB. New attractions like Ocean Stories offer insight into Arctic life, climate and the region's deep connection to the sea, while local guides invite visitors to experience Sami culture, king crab safaris and hiking adventures beyond the famous North Cape plateau.

Together, these experiences reveal that the North Cape is far more than a single viewpoint, it's a gateway to one of the Arctic's richest coastal landscapes.

More reasons to stay longer
Across Northern Norway, many of this year's newest additions encourage visitors not simply to see more, but to stay longer.

On Helgeland, Ytri represents a new generation of design-led accommodation where the place to stay becomes part of the journey itself. Surrounded by mountains, sea and islands, it reflects growing demand for smaller, experience-driven stays that connect visitors more closely with nature.

Meanwhile, Finnmark has introduced a new Summer Pass, making it easier for visitors to travel between destinations across Norway's northernmost county and encouraging them to spend more time exploring the region.

Together, these new experiences showcase a Northern Norway that goes far beyond its iconic highlights. Whether it's discovering hidden coastal communities, learning more about Arctic culture or finding moments of stillness on the water, this summer offers countless new ways to experience one of Europe's most extraordinary destinations.
