Ontario Energy-from-Waste Company Elementa Group and the US Nonprofit R&D heavy-weight, Battelle (Columbus, Ohio), are winners of a 2013 Defense Energy Technology Challenge/Utility Technology Challenge award for their Steam Reformation process.

Elementa and Battelle will be recognized along with other award winners at the US Defense Energy Summit, November 11-13 in Austin, Texas.

As part of a strategic partnership, Battelle is delivering Elementa’s leading-edge energy technology for applications in the US Department of Defense marketplace.

“Our partnership with Battelle is opening up a new and significant market for Elementa’s technology,” said Jayson Zwierschke, CEO of Elementa Group.  “ Entering the US Defense Department marketplace with an R&D powerhouse like Battelle and receiving this award which recognizes the technology’s ‘proven manufacturability’ continues to demonstrate the potential of our combustion-free Steam Reformation technology.”

The technology is a novel waste-to-gas conversion technology that produces clean and efficient renewable energy from waste feedstock. It is based on a unique steam reformation (SR) process, a patented clean-energy technology that uses high temperature SR in a non-oxidizing environment to chemically break down carbon-based materials into a clean syngas.

Unlike most current systems that require oxidation/incineration, the system does not generate noxious oxides and virtually eliminates the need for landfills. Syngas can be utilized to generate electricity or produce hydrogen and a variety of liquid fuels.

“Elementa very much looks forward to the ongoing collaboration excellence and the partnership with Battelle,” said Elementa’s Chief Technology Officer, Ernie Dueck, P.Eng. “Elementa is delighted in the recognition this provides for the years of extraordinary effort contributed by the entire Elementa team and collaborators that has been devoted to achieving what Elementa believes is the most environmentally beneficial and energy efficient waste conversion process that has been developed to date. The Elementa energy-from-waste process remains one of the most technically promising alternative technologies currently available.”

For military installations, the Elementa/Battelle energy-from-waste solution provides a means to locally generate power and fuels using government-owned infrastructure or via third-party ownership/operation. The development of an independent, efficient and secure energy system that can integrate with existing and future grid architectures and that uses readily available feed stock, reduces dependence on outside energy sources and provides a path to more cost-effective mission accomplishment, as well as to meeting compliance mandates.

The annual Defense Energy Technology Challenge/Utility Technology Challenge awards programs recognize companies and technologies focused on cleaner and more environmentally sustainable energy solutions and are designed to meet the complex needs of the military and commercial industries.  Thirty awards were given to the technologies with the best balance of stage of development, potential impact, cost and ease of implementation. The Defense Energy Summit (DES) is produced by TechConnect, in partnership with the Clean Technology & Sustainable Industries Organization (CTSI), which runs both challenge programs.

About the Elementa Group

Elementa Group Inc. is a privately-held Canadian cleantech energy company that has developed a patented waste conversion technology process that efficiently and economically converts carbon-based materials (including municipal solid waste) into clean synthetic gas. Elementa Group Inc. successfully built and operated a pilot plant from 2007 – 2011 in the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and has an agreement with the City to process its MSW and produce upwards of 10 MW of “clean” electricity.  Construction of the plant is expected to commence in early 2014 and be in operation in 2016.  Elementa Group Inc. is headquartered in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario www.elementagroup.com.
