The Virtual High School to Sponsor Online Summer School for Underserved Students
Launches 1K Kids Fundraising Campaign To Make Summer School Accessible & Affordable for Families in Low-Income Communities
The Virtual High School (www.thevirtualhighschool.org), a non-profit empowering schools with the industry’s best online learning programs, today announced the launch of a campaign designed to raise $225,000 by July 1, 2014. The money raised will make it possible for upwards of 1,000 students in underserved communities throughout the U.S. to participate in The Virtual High School’s (VHS) online summer school program. These courses are designed to create a pathway to college and potential careers.
In most low-income communities across the country, summer learning opportunities are either too expensive, not easily accessible or are only covered if the student needs the credits to graduate. “We want to help create a positive future for these students regardless of their socioeconomic status,” said Jeffrey A. Elliott, President & CEO of VHS. “We’d love to be able to partner on this campaign with a company who shares our commitment to quality education and are currently in talks with a number of organizations.”
Since 2003, VHS’ flexible online summer school program has successfully served thousands of students, enabling them to makeup credits or get ahead by taking their course from any location and even while juggling summer jobs. The program brings together an experienced, certified online teacher and up to 25 students from different states and countries, helping them develop 21st century skills by fostering online collaboration with peers from all over the globe. The VHS 2014 online summer school program consists of 23 online classes, including everything from Algebra to English to Video Game Design.
The VHS mission is to provide students with access to high quality online and blended learning experiences, while supporting educators with the professional development and services they need to provide an effective 21st century education for every student. VHS partner schools have access to a wide range of core, elective, and AP® courses that inspire, ignite and deepen learning as well as enable students to develop independent learning skills, explore college majors and careers, earn credits and participate in global classrooms. Courses are taught by highly qualified teachers who are specially trained in online teaching best practices, and are certified in their subject areas.
Both individuals and companies are being encouraged to contribute donations of all sizes to 1K Kids and named scholarships are also available. To contribute or to learn more, visit http://www.thevirtualhighschool.org/donate.
