Entertainment giant, Rovio Entertainment, integrates Aspera Faspex on Demand to reliably move Angry Birds animation series to broadcast partners around the world

Booth 7.K30 IBC2013, Amsterdam — September 10, 2013 Aspera, Inc., creators of next-generation software technologies that move the world’s large data at maximum speed, today announced that Rovio Entertainment, media entertainment company and creator of the global phenomenon Angry Birds, has deployed Aspera’s high-speed file transfer software Faspex on Demand to deliver content reliably and quickly to more than 20 broadcast partners worldwide.

Angry Birds became an international phenomenon within a few months of its release and is now the number one paid app of all time. Following its success in mobile gaming, Angry Birds has expanded rapidly in entertainment, publishing and licensing to become a huge international brand. To support this rapid growth and enable the business to run effectively, Rovio required reliable and scalable file-transfer technology to accelerate its content delivery to their broadcast partners and to streamline the related operational processes.

Rovio’s 52-part animation series – the latest addition to the Angry Birds brand of entertainment products – is broadcast on the Toons channel that is part of Rovio’s Angry Birds games, and also distributed through TV broadcasters and on-demand networks around the world. Each episode is first produced to high-quality animation, then encoded for each broadcaster and delivered to them via Faspex on Demand. It was essential that the transfer method was fast and reliable to ensure broadcasters received high-quality content on time, no matter where they were in the world.

Timo Rongas, lead programmer for animation at Rovio, said: ‘For us the key requirements when sourcing a transfer technology were fast delivery, industry-recognized software and the possibility to avoid the need to host any servers locally. Aspera delivered on these requirements with ease. The scalability of their software made it a very successful implementation for Rovio. Without Aspera software, the delivery of the Angry Birds TV series would be more cumbersome and slow.’

Bruce Brewer, European sales director, Aspera said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Rovio. The company has built an outstanding brand in the entertainment industry and we are very proud to be part of the Angry Birds phenomenon as well as enjoying continued momentum in the media and entertainment industry.’

Demonstrations of Aspera Faspex on Demand, along with the entire suite of Aspera high-speed transfer software, will be available at IBC2013 stand 7.K30.
