Mårten Sandén to chair the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award jury
The board of the Swedish Arts Council has appointed Mårten Sandén as the new chair of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award jury. Agnes Palmberg and Marcus Barbosa Ferreira will also join the jury as new members. They begin their terms on 1 July.
“It is a great honour to be entrusted with leading the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award jury over the coming years. The award is unique and its mission is vital, and the jury’s range and expertise guarantee that the work will be both enjoyable and exciting”, says Mårten Sandén.
Mårten Sandén is an author and a songwriter. He has served on the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award jury since 2018. He is also a member of the Swedish Crime Writers’ Academy and the Swedish Academy for Children’s Books. In 2015, he received the Astrid Lindgren Prize for distinguished authorship in Swedish children’s and youth literature.
Mårten Sandén replaces Boel Westin, who has served as jury chair since 2014.
Agnes Palmberg is a great-grandchild of Astrid Lindgren and is employed by The Astrid Lindgren Company. She holds a BA in political science from Uppsala University and an MS in development studies from Lund University. She has previously worked for the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the United Nations.
Marcus Barbosa Ferreira is a children’s librarian at the Umeå City Library. He also sits on the jury for the Snöbollen Prize for Swedish picture book of the year. He is a former host of the program Bokslukarna (Bookworms) on Sveriges Television and has served on the Swedish Arts Council’s peer review group for children’s and youth literature and the August Prize jury group for children’s and youth literature.
Agnes Palmberg and Marcus Barbosa Ferreira replace Johan Palmberg and Mårten Sandén (who becomes the new jury chair).

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature. With a prize of five million Swedish kronor, it is the largest award of its kind. Administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.
