For the eighteenth time, the ALMA jury will name the laureate of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. The prize sum of SEK 5 million (approx. EUR 440 000) makes it the world’s largest award that focuses on quality literature for children and YA and the importance of reading.

− This year more countries than ever are represented in the list of candidates, which is fantastic. It makes us take in new worlds, and thus broadens the perspectives of the jury in our work, says Boel Westin, Chair of the ALMA jury.

About the announcement
ALMA Jury Chair Boel Westin will announce the decision of the jury at a press conference from Filmhuset in Stockholm on Tuesday, March 31 at 12.45 pm CEST. A full presentation of the laureate will follow. The press conference is led by journalist Johar Bendjelloul and will be broadcast live on social media and at the international Children’s Book Fair in Bologna.

The 2020 candidates
In total, 240 candidates from all over the world are in the running for the award. Most candidates are writers and illustrators, but storytellers and organisations working with reading promotion can also be rewarded. The list of candidates is available here. Last year’s recipient was the Belgian author Bart Moeyaert.
