The 2026 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award to be announced

Welcome to cover the announcement of the 2026 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, live from Stockholm and the Bologna Children's Book Fair on April 14. The award amounts to 5 million SEK (approx. 464 000 EUR, 530 000 USD) making it the world's largest award for children’s and young adult literature. This year, 263 candidates from 74 countries and regions are nominated.

When: Tuesday, April 14 at 13:00 CET
Venue: Foajé 3, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Stockholm

Swedish Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand will perform an official greeting. The jury chair Boel Westin will then announce the laureate and read the motivation. This is followed by a presentation of the laureate. The event will be hosted by Philomène Grandin. The announcement will be broadcast live on alma.se/en.

At the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the announcement will be shown at the Illustrators Café. The program starts at 12:45 with a speech by Karin Höglund, Ambassador of Sweden to Italy. This is followed by a presentation of the laureate.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature. With a prize of five million Swedish kronor, it is the largest award of its kind. Administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.
