The Atlanta History Center Presents Enriching Summer Programs for Children

The Atlanta History Center and its Midtown campus located at Margaret Mitchell House unveil another great schedule of Summer Camp themes. Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House campers explore a range of topics, engage in quality activities, and expand creative skills. With new themes each week, every child will likely find several topics to match their particular interests.

Camps at both sites run June 2 – August 1. Camp registration is already in progress and space is limited, so register early. To register a camper for the Atlanta History Center or Margaret Mitchell House camps, call 404.814.4018 or visit our website to register online. ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER SUMMER CAMPS

Location: 130 West Paces Ferry Road NW

History comes to life as AHC summer campers explore the past through games, historic simulations, performances, outdoor expeditions, and hands-on activities. Each weekly session has a new theme, so campers enjoy a variety of immersive camp experiences all summer long. The museum is our playground! 

PRESCHOOL CAMP

Adventures in History

July 7-11

Ages 4-5

Your curious little one will love discovering history in a camp designed just for them. Campers spend the day exploring subjects they love such as farms, trains, houses, and animals through fun games, stories, and crafts. In the afternoons, campers have time to rest and play under the caring supervision of our educators.

Globe Trekkers and Trailblazers

June 2-6

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

Follow in the footsteps of Vikings, pirates, conquistadors, and famous explorers on their epic adventures to find remarkable discoveries.  By land, sea, or space, it’s the journey of a lifetime.

The 1930s

June 9-13

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

From the stock market crash to the Great Depression, and the dust bowl to the New Deal, visit this unique period in US history when high spirits mixed with bad luck.  Learn how both sides lived with a behind-the-scenes pass to the Swan House.  “Happy Days Are Here Again!” 

History of Medicine

June 16-20

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

The history of medicine is filled with stories of inexplicable illnesses, dubious diagnoses, and curious "cures."  Explore Native American herbal remedies, 19thcentury snake oils, life-changing medical advancements, historic pandemics, and bizarre medical treatments—the weird, the gross, and the questionable—we have the cure for what ails you!

1964

June 23-27

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

The Warren Report is released in the wake of the JFK assassination.  Beatlemania grips the nation, and the British Invasion begins.  Vietnam and the Cold War rage on.  Nelson Mandela is imprisoned.  The Civil Rights Act is signed.  Martin Luther King, Jr. receives the Nobel Peace Prize.  And that’s just scratching the surface.  What a year it was! 

Southeastern Indians

July 7-11

Please note: this camp is for ages 6-8 only

Who was here first?  Where are they now?  Discover the history and culture of the tribes of the Southeast through hands-on activities exploring their art, food, games, language, and beliefs, and see how their influence continues to shape the region today. 

Science Fiction Prediction

July 14-18

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

Touch screens, ear buds, the cloud, genetic engineering, even tanks and submarines—so many things in our modern world were actually invented decades ago when imaginative writers put pen to paper.  Examine the science and history behind movies, comics, TV shows and books to see how so many things dreamt up in works of science fiction have become reality.

The Battle of Atlanta

July 21-25

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

The Civil War comes home.  The battle is fought in our backyards.  Reenactors and historians bring the homefront and the battlefront to life on our Civil War era farm and in our award-winning exhibitions in this week-long exploration of the turning point of the Civil War.

The Great War

July 28-August 1

Ages 6-8 and 9-11

This summer marks the 100thanniversary of one the bloodiest conflicts the world has ever known. Learn about the causes and consequences of WWI and see the war through the eyes of the men and women who lived it.  Fight in the trenches, protest in Russia, make peace in Versailles, and experience ‘the war to end all wars.’

MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE SUMMER CAMPS

Location: 990 Peachtree Street NE

Margaret Mitchell House writing camps provide an opportunity for youth to discover the power and excitement of writing while honing their skills in a fun, interactive environment.  With 10-15 participants per camp, each young author receives individual attention while learning how to create meaningful prose through a variety of techniques, like stream-of-consciousness writing, games, journaling, free verse poetry, and other forms.

Mystery in the City: On the Case

June 2-6

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Follow the clues of a mysterious case as its twists and turns take you around the city of Atlanta.  Play detective on morning field trips and use your new-found experience to pen stories of mystery and intrigue.  Don’t let this case grow cold! 

From Page to Stage: Playwriting

June 9-13

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Set the stage for the perfect summer.  Delve into the world of theater, journeying from an inkling of an idea on the page, and from the page to the stage.  Develop your own unique voice and experience first-hand the joy of hearing your words, characters, and situations come to life as you create a script for a live audience.  Bravo!

Write On: The Essentials

June 16-20

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Whether you are writing for fun or writing for school, you will benefit from learning the basics of doing research, building compelling characters and interesting plots, and writing a good story with good grammar. Through word and writing games, journaling, and an off-site observational field trip, learn the essentials that lead to a “writing life.”

Extra! Extra! Write All About It!

June 23-27

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Explore the many different fields of journalism as you explore the many sights and sounds our exciting city has to offer. Take on the role of an investigative reporter, photojournalist, sports writer, and more as you visit museums, theaters, parks, and other cultural destinations. 

Mystery in the City: Haunts and Habitats

July 7-11

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Unravel the mysteries of Atlanta’s historic places and haunted spaces. Use the stories and environments you encounter during daily field trips to help you delve into character, setting, plot, and dialogue as you craft your own mysterious story. 

Sci-Fi and Fantasy

July 14-18

Ages 9-11 and 12-14

Gain inspiration from some of your favorite works of science fiction and fantasy and discover the fundamentals to creating your own unique world. With creatures, time travel, and space invasion, anything is possible within your vast imagination.

Communication is key in our 21stcentury world.  Learn how to analyze documents, think critically, and express yourself clearly.  Research papers, college applications, resumes, and even flights of fanciful writing will be more effective if you know yourself, know your material, and know your audience.

GENERAL SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION

Camp Hours:

  • AHC Camps: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm; extended day care options also available.
  • AHC Camps: Each week concludes with a special Friday afternoon event featuring a display of campers’ projects.
  • AHC campers who are not participating in extended childcare may be dropped off at the Atlanta History Center after 8:45 am and picked up between 3:45 and 4:00 pm.
  • MMH Camps: Monday through Friday 9:30 am - 5:00 pm; campers may be dropped off at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown after 9:15 am and must be picked up by 5:00 pm.
  • MMH Camps: Each session wraps with a Writers Showcase for family and friends on the last day of camp.  Mark your calendars!

Extended Childcare

  • AHC: Morning session: 8:00 – 9:00 AM and/or afternoon session: 4:00 – 5:00 pm daily (There is a $25 additional charge per session.) Please note that children cannot be dropped off before 8:00 am and must be picked up promptly by 5:00 pm. Regrettably, due to staffing considerations, we must impose a late charge of $1 per minute due at pick-up if a child is not picked up on time.

Fees

  • AHC Campers: $225 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$275 per week for nonmembers.
  • MMH Campers: $325 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$375 per week for nonmembers.

Lunch

  • AHC campers may purchase lunch for the entire week from Chick-Fil-A at our campus’s Coca-Cola Café at the cost of $40.00 per camper. Alternately, children must bring bag lunches each day. In addition, two snacks will be provided daily.
  • MMH campers must bring bag lunches each day.  In addition, light snacks will be provided.

Cancellation Policy

No refunds can be made for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the start of the selected camp. Any cancellation or change made more than two weeks before your child’s first day of camp carries an administrative fee of $25. If you withdraw your child before this two week deadline, you will receive a refund less the $25 fee.
