Learn About Home Front Activities at 1860s Smith Family Farm Encampments, Reenactments, and Demonstrations

This March the Atlanta History Center continues commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial with the family program Citizens and Soldiers. The Atlanta History Center, home to one of the largest Civil War collections in the United States, delves further into the many aspects of the war with interactive performances, demonstrations, and games. A day full of engaging activities helps visitors to better understand the military logistics of the conflict as well as how this life-altering moment in American history affected the people who experienced it.

On Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, the Atlanta History Center presents the family program Citizens and Soldiers.

The whole family can have fun while learning about home front activities and encampments through reenactments and demonstrations on our 1860s Smith Family Farm. Living history interpreters present stories of Civil War soldiers and families on the home front. Also enjoy tours of our award-winning Civil War exhibition, Turning Point: The American Civil War.

Atlanta History Center Museum Activities

The Music of the Civil War, Performed by “Bonnie Blue Briana” – Kennedy Theatre

11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm

Local talent, Miss Briana Duensing, performs various selections of popular music from the Civil War era.

Carrie Berry Performance – Turning Point Exhibition

11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm

Understand the Civil War through the eyes of a small child when Carrie Berry shares her hopes and troubles as a ten-year-old girl during wartime Atlanta.

Guided Tours of Turning Point: The American Civil War

12:00 pm, 2:00 pm

Visitors enjoy guided tours through Turning Point: The American Civil War where they can explore the most critical conflict in our nation’s history through one of the nation’s largest exhibitions on the Civil War featuring more than 1,500 original artifacts, photographs, dioramas, videos, and interactive components.

Smith Family Farm Activities

Civil War Encampment by the Armory Guard

Visit with the Armory Guard and learn what it was like to be a soldier during the Civil War. See how soldiers trained, drilled, cooked, and prepared to leave their winter quarters and march to battle.

Monetary Inflation Activity

Ongoing

Inflation wreaked havoc in the South during the Civil War. This activity gives visitors hands-on experience with how inflation impacted the home front and what people did to get the items and goods they needed to help their families and businesses survive during wartime.

Paper Cartridge Rolling

Ongoing

During the war women and children were the primary ones rolling and filling rifle cartridges. They were favored for this kind of work because their smaller hands made them more dexterous and efficient. Come and see if you would have been able to meet the requirement of rolling 800 cartridges a day.

Nate Barker, Union Soldier Performance

Join, Nate Barker, a Union soldier, as he considers his future as a member of the 54thRegiment, one of the first official African American units in the U.S. Army. 

Civil War Cooking Talk

Hear how food shortages and rising prices for stapled goods forced women on the home front to create innovative substitutions into their meals.  Come consider which substitutions you would be willing to try at home and which are just too much.

Adeline’s Crossroad Monologue

Visitors are invited to meet Adeline Smith Medlock and help her make a crucial decision during the harsh winter of 1864.

Tableau Vivant Activity – Mabel Dom Reeder Amphitheater

12:00 pm, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm

Guests of all ages are invited to see what they would have looked like during the Civil War by using costumes and props to create a “living picture.

Rails and Trails

12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm

An activity designed with older children in mind, participants learn about regional Georgia through trivia and interactive games.

Food for Sale

Delicious food available for purchase from Coca Cola Café serving a limited Chik fil A menu. Additionally, enjoy Bomb Squad Pizza available from 11am – 2 pm.
