ENRICHING SUMMER CAMP ACTIVITIES AT THE ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER AND MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE
The Atlanta History Center and its Midtown campus located at Margaret Mitchell House unveils another great schedule of Summer Camp themes that offer children of all ages an enriching alternative to a summer in front of the television. Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House campers explore a range of topics, engage in quality activities, and expand creative skills. With new themes each week, every child will likely find a topic to match their particular interests.
Camps at both sites run June 4 – August 3. Camp registration is already in progress and space is limited, so register early. ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER SUMMER CAMPS
Location: 130 West Paces Ferry Road
Atlanta History Center summer campers explore the past and the world around them through enriching and engaging activities. Join the fun with games, stories, crafts, and outdoor expeditions, as well as interactive exhibitions. Each weekly session has a new theme, so campers enjoy a variety of hands-on, immersive camp experiences all summer long.
PRE-SCHOOL CAMP
Adventures in History
June 4-8 and July 30-August 3
This camp is for children ages 4-5
Your curious little one will love discovering history in a camp designed just for them. Campers spend the day exploring subjects they love, including farms, trains, houses, animals, and more, through fun games, stories, and arts and crafts. In the afternoons, campers have time to rest and play under the caring supervision of our educators.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP
Museum Theater
June 4-8
This camp is for ages 12-14
Who said history is boring? Museum theater brings history to life through drama, comedy, music, and intriguing characters and storylines. Throughout this fun week, campers work with our staff of historians,
playwrights, and actors to create their own history-based theatrical production. We will wrap up the week with a grand opening of their play for family and friends.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPS
From Pilgrim to Patriot
June 11-15
This camp is for ages 6-11
During the summer of 1787, 225 years ago, our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution of the United States. Join us for this top-requested camp and explore the captivating Colonial era, the riveting Revolutionary War, and the fascinating formation of our nation.
Follow that Food

This camp is for ages 6-11
Noodles are from China and tomatoes from South America – so why are they known as traditional Italian food? Trace the history of your favorite foods during this fun week full of culinary sleuthing, with a heavy pinch of cooking and taste-testing thrown in for good measure.
The States of the Union

This camp is for ages 6-11
How did the states get their shapes? Travel through 50 states in 5 days exploring the history, geography, and fun facts of these United States of America. You will be amazed how much you can learn and how fun it will be, from sea to shining sea.

Back by popular demand - join us for an all new and even weirder week full of crypto zoology, ancient aliens, and historic blunders and hoaxes. Explore the weird and wacky side of history!
Art through the Ages

Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art? Address that age-old question by taking a journey around the world and through time. From cave paintings to cameras, Renaissance to Realism, New York to New Guinea, campers create fun cultural art projects using a variety of media.
Legendary Empires

This camp is for ages 6-11
Empires like the Romans, the Egyptians, and the Aztecs often had amazing mythologies behind them. Uncover the history of the world’s great empires, and discover the myths and legends that are still a part of our culture today.
Let the Games Begin

This camp is for ages 6-8
As the 2012 Olympic Games get underway, get into the Olympic spirit by exploring the Games’ nearly 3,000 year history. Try out ancient sports, discover modern heroes, and participate in your own Olympic Games.
MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE CAMPS
Location: 990 Peachtree Street
Writing camps provide an opportunity for youth to discover the power and excitement of writing while honing their skills in a fun, interactive environment. With 10-15 participants per camp, each young author receives individual attention while learning how to create meaningful prose through a variety of techniques, like stream-of-consciousness writing, journaling, free verse poetry, and other forms.
Mystery in the City: Search for the Lost Phoenix
June 4-8
This camp is for ages 10-14
Unravel the mysteries of historic Atlanta and gain inspiration from them to pen stories of mystery and intrigue. Take daily morning field trips to discover lesser known pockets of the city and personal stories of its residents.
Everyone’s a Critic

This camp is for ages 10-14
Spend mornings exploring the sights and sounds of Atlanta while visiting museums, theaters, parks, and other cultural destinations and soaking in everything our exciting city has to offer. Spend afternoons learning to think critically and evaluating your experiences through writing.
Good Things Come in Small Packages

Grow your love for all things small. From short stories and haiku, to fables, jokes, and even blogs, spend the week creating your own Lilliputian literary works while sharpening your craft to create succinct yet meaningful and well-rounded pieces.
Fairytales and Fantasy

Whether you love good, old fashioned fairytales, or richly developed fantasy stories, it is all about inventing a new world, new creatures, or even a new language. Gain inspiration from some of your favorite works and discover the fundamentals to creating your own unique world. Explore the possibilities!
From Page to Stage: Playwriting
July 9-13
This camp is for ages 10-14
Set the stage for the perfect summer. Delve into the world of theater, journeying from an inkling of an idea on the page, and from the page to the stage. Develop your own unique voice and experience first-hand the joy of hearing your words, characters, and situations come to life as you create a script for a live audience. Bravo!
Mystery in the City: Haunts and Habitats
July 16-20
This camp is for ages 10-14
Travel to the scene of the crime, imagine the shady characters who might have dwelt there, and then use your inspiration to craft your own mysterious story. Super sleuths enjoy four morning field trips to historic sites and public places around Atlanta and use the field trip experiences to delve into character, setting, plot, and dialogue.
Write On: The Essentials
July 23-27
This camp is for ages 10-14
Whether you are writing for fun or writing for school, you will benefit from learning the basics of doing research, building compelling characters and interesting plots, and writing a good story with good grammar. Through word and writing games, journaling, and an off-site observational field trip, learn the essentials that lead to a “writing life.”
Stories in Pictures: Creating Comics
July 30-August 3
This camp is for ages 10-14
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a comic book must be worth hundreds of pages of type. Develop your own characters and plot, and illustrate the world you create. By the end of the week, campers will have a comic book of their own creation to take home.
GENERAL SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION
Camp Hours:
- AHC Camps: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm; extended day care options also available.
- AHC Camps: Each week concludes with a special Friday afternoon event featuring a display of campers’ projects.
- AHC campers who are not participating in extended childcare may be dropped off at the Atlanta History Center after 8:45 am and picked up between 3:45 and 4:00 pm.
- MMH Camps: Monday through Friday 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
- MMH Camps: Each session wraps with a Writers Showcase for family and friends on the last day of camp. Mark your calendars!
- MMH campers may be dropped off at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown after 9:15 am and must be picked up by 5:00 pm.
Extended Childcare
- AHC: 8:00 – 9:00 am or 4:00 – 5:00 pm daily ($25 per session additional charge) Please note that children cannot be dropped off before 8:00 am and must be picked up promptly by 5:00 pm. Regrettably, due to staffing considerations, we must impose a late charge of $1 per minute due at pick-up if a child is not picked up on time.
Fees
- AHC Campers: $225 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$275 per week for nonmembers.
- MMH Campers: $325 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$375 per week for nonmembers.
Lunch
- AHC campers may purchase lunch for the entire week from Chick-Fil-A at our campus’s Coca-Cola Café at the cost of $36.25 per camper. Alternately, children must bring bag lunches each day. In addition, two snacks will be provided daily.
- MMH campers must bring bag lunches each day. In addition, light snacks will be provided.
Cancellation Policy
No refunds can be made for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the start of the selected camp. Any cancellation or change made more than two weeks before your child’s first day of camp carries an administrative fee of $25; if you withdraw your child before this two week deadline you will receive a refund less the $25 fee.
