EXPLORE THE MILITARY TIMELINE AT THE ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER
This Memorial Day Weekend join the Atlanta History Center in honoring U.S. veterans of generations past as well as those of today. Spend the day traveling the military timeline from the American Revolution to current conflicts. Meet veterans who share personal stories of wartime and memorabilia. Additional activities include interaction with living history interpreters, a Civil War encampment, military vehicle display, guest speakers, exhibitions, kid friendly activities, and opportunities to share your story with StoryCorps.

Featured Lecture by Alvin Townley – Kennedy Theater, 2:00 pm
Alvin Townley discusses his fourth book Defiant. Defiant reveals the amazing and untold true story of eleven POWs in Vietnam, known as the Alcatraz Eleven, eleven Americans the North Vietnamese identified as their most uncooperative and subversive captives. The book also tells the story of the "Alcatraz wives," who fought for their husbands' safe return when it seemed nobody else would. This epic story, which takes place over eight years - has inspired praise from all corners of America and deeply affects everyone who reads it, including both Senator John McCain and President Jimmy Carter.
Trench Warfare Activity – Large Classroom
Role play and experience what it was like to be a WWI soldier. As the sound of gunfire begins to wane, cautiously climb out of your trench and greet your enemy in no man’s land.
Firing Demonstration – Lawn next to the Mabel Dorn Reeder Amphitheater
See how soldiers prepared and fired weapons in past conflicts during a special demonstration.
Military Vehicle Display – In front of Museum, Ongoing
Take your picture with a World War II Jeep! Celebrities in their own right, military vehicles played an important part in carrying soldiers to, from, and through the combat zone.
Audio Tours of Turning Point Exhibition – Turning Point exhibition, Ongoing
Check-in at the admission’s desk to receive a headset that guides guests through the exhibition’s display of major events in the American Civil War that affected the lives of soldiers and those on the home front.
Crafts – Olympic Lobby, Ongoing
Create your own mementos to remember the day! Kids have the opportunity to engage in military themed hands-on craft activities and to take home their creations to share about their day with friends and family.
Meet Veterans – Inside Museum, Ongoing
Visit with veterans of the United States Armed Forces to learn about serving in the military on and off the battlefield.
Reenactors representing Veterans from American Revolution to modern conflicts – Smith Family Farm, Ongoing
Living history interpreters display memorabilia and describe what soldiers from the past might have experienced while fighting for the United States from the very birth of the nation to modern wars.
Civil War Encampment – Smith Family Farm, Ongoing
Learn what it was like to be a soldier during the Civil War. See how soldiers trained, drilled, cooked, and prepared to leave their temporary quarters before marching to battle.
Self-guided tours of Veterans Park – Corner of West Paces Ferry and Slaton Drive, Ongoing
View the outdoor display in Veterans Park honoring those who served the United States Armed Forces. Use your smartphone to access recordings of stories shared by veterans in their own voice.
